I'm Dante Magdaluyo, president and chief portrait & glamour photographer for Anecdotes Photography,Ltd.. Some of my clients ask me what sort of lighting do I use for portrait and glamour photography. I use the following: Rembrandt, paramount or butterfly, side lighting, hair lighting and Loupe lighting.
Rembrandt lighting is placing my main light at a 45 degree angle to my subject's face. Why is it called Rembrandt? It's because it is named after a famous Dutch painter, Rembrandt, who uses this skylight effect for his portraits. This technique is used a lot now by glamour and fashion photographers. Check out the images at Victoria's Secret catalog or any other glamour magazines.
The paramount or butterfly lighting is placing the light in front of the subject but not quite a snap shot. This technique is widely used for headshots of Hollywood actors and actresses in the 1940s and is still very popular in todays glamour and fashion magazines.
The next most popular lighting I use is the side-lighting. It is placing the light at a 90 degree angle to the subject. This technique is more popular for men.
Why do I know all of these? I'm a graduate and merit award winner from New York Institute of Photography, the largest and oldest photography school in the world. I also learned the latest advanced lighting techniques in glamour portraiture from three of Playboy's top centerfold photographers; Arny Freytag (over 150 centerfolds), Jarmo Poheniemi and David Mecey.
